UM.......The Des Moines Register?

Have you noticed the TV news is calling "The Annual Bike Ride Across Iowa" dropping the Register's name?

Nice try - Only KCRG is changing the name - just because it is the Register's event and not associated with the Gazette. All the other TV news operations have no trouble with the name.

At the risk of turning this into a print forum, this is the 21st century. These days, the Register struggles to be relevant anywhere outside "The Golden Circle" which is like a circle jerk except, well, it's "golden." Really, does any one in Eastern Iowa read the Register except displaced Central Iowans?

The Gazette needn't worry about the Register any longer. They own Eastern Iowa, they just let Karras' and Kaul's old ride pass through their territory once a year.

Has anyone done a live radio shot this year while riding? I tried once, with a Marti unit and battery in a milk crate strapped to a behind the seat rack. Dang near impaled someone passing by with the whip, yep it was an old 160 meg unit. No, it didn't go too well.

RAGBRAI is a registered trademark of the Des Moines Register. They are famous for sending out cease and desist notes

The Gazette "owns" eastern Iowa? LOL. They "own" Cedar Rapids (to the extent any newspaper owns anything other than debt these days), but the paper doesn't exist in NE Iowa, Waterloo, Dubuque or the Quad Cities.

If KCRG is changing the name, that's a hack move. The name is the name and everyone knows whom and what is behind the event. If it's important enough to cover, at least get it right and save the amateurish stunts for after the "on air" light clicks off.

It's hack coverage whomever is doing it. There isn't safety in numbers when you're being stupid.

You're right on that, because the only town in Muscatine County that I can even get the Gazette in is West Liberty, and that's because it's so close to Iowa City. And they do exist in Northeast Iowa BTW. I don't see too many people reading the W-CF Courier, but some do read the Telegraph-Herald, yet most still read the Gazette.

"Most" in NE Iowa do not read the Gazette. "Most" in Cedar Rapids don't read the Gazette. Most people in any town don't read any newspaper any longer.

North and East of Waterloo/CF, the Gazette does not exist. It does not exist in Dubuque County. It does not exist in the Quad Cities.

And all of this about a newspaper "owning" the market is important why??? I thought this was a radio discussion board. The event is RAGBRAI...call it what it is and move on. There are things more important than arguing about who is or isn't having a sissy-fit over the name.

You have to love the irony of wasting people's time with a post about wasting people's time.

Yes it is. It's also ironic that you chose to waste your time to respond to a post about wasting time, that was written in response to others wasting time. I also think it's ironic that we are all willing to waste our time with this pansy-ass board where any jack-wagon can spew forth mindless crap about anyone and anything remotely connected to broadcasting. In the words of R. Lee Ermey, maybe we should chug over to namby-pamby land to pick up some self confidence!

Your thoughts?????
